What We’re All About
Many children entering the foster care system have few if any personal items from home to bring with them. Some have only the clothes on their backs. On what could be the scariest day of their lives, don’t these children deserve some comfort?
We are a nonprofit that makes and donates bags filled with comfort items to children entering the foster care system in St. Louis County, Minnesota. About 750 children enter the foster care system each year, and our goal is to have a bag ready for every single one.
What We Do
Making A Difference
Buddy Bags
At Precious Cargo MN, our main project right now is making welcome bags, or buddy bags. Most items are handmade by us. Our hope is that members of our community may be interested in making and donating these items as well!
We make messenger bags using heavy duty outdoor fabric and put in: Handmade plush bear, Handmade wallet or coin pouch, car/animal play mats, memory game, etc.), Handmade hair accessories, Notebook, Pencils and pen-Crayons/ Markers/ Colored Pencils, Toothbrushes (donated by Piedmont Dental), Toothpaste (donated by Mount Royal Dental), books (donated by The Bookstore at Fitgers), and piggy banks (donated by Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union).

As we are just starting out, our current project is just the buddy bags. I have ideas for what we could do also and will update this as we make more progress!

This project was created with the goal of community involvement. Many worthy causes request monetary donations, but not everyone is in a position to give that.
Our hope is that smaller actions can contribute to big change. This could be as simple as purchasing an extra couple notebooks or pencils while school shopping with your own children. Or sewing a few bears or coin pouches with some leftover fabric from around the house. Our community is filled with kindness, generosity, and compassion. We would love your help in filling these bags with special items made with love!
